Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.

Police say they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.

The liquid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they reported.

Officers then found multiple other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police state preliminary tests indicate the substance was likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no clue as to its source; officials are presently not informed of any physical harm in association with the incident," they added.

Municipal representatives said they were working "to unravel the case" and have asked to the community for details.

An important political figure stated the attack rendered him stunned and needed to be addressed quickly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right attack in 2020," he posted on social media, recalling the death of nine victims by a gunman targeting individuals of migrant background in 2020.
